Asbestos is a crystalline silicate mineral that has been used for thousands of years in various materials to increase their tensile strength, fireproofing properties and durability. Its fibres can break down to microscopic sizes and get trapped in your lungs and accumulate over time and cause significant damage.
Asbestos removal is regulated by WorkSafeBC and the federal government, and should be conducted by qualified, licensed and experienced professionals. Unsafe removal practices can contribute to and increase the risk of contracting respiratory illnesses such as Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and Lung Cancer.
Once a scope of work is established for your project, you are required to conduct Hazardous Materials sampling on the building materials to be impacted. A consultant will prepare a pre-renovation or pre-demolition report, which can then be used by contractors to prepare a proposal for Hazardous Material removal and demolition.
Hiring the right consultant to conduct your building survey is a big first step, this is not an area where you want to take the lowest bid price. An experienced consultant will be able to identify potential issues with your project and check for additional layers of flooring or walls, hidden insulations and all relevant hazards for your project.
Though Darren has a Level S Certificate, we prefer to keep our services to the removal process to eliminate any concerns with conflicts of interest. We work with two consulting firms who provide high quality reports and can retain them on your behalf if you prefer.
Now we can review the report with your scope of work, and conduct a site inspection to give you a quote for the safe removal and disposal of the Hazardous Materials.
At Evergreen it is our mandate to give consistent updates to the progress of your project, and discuss any potential issues as soon as they arise. We believe in complete transparency with our clients to avoid surprise change orders and costly disputes. Additionally, we are required to provide our clients with copies of all the certificates of the employee’s working on your projects, and the corresponding paperwork prior to mobilization.
Lead is often overlooked in renovation projects. Depending on the material the lead is found in (Paints or lead products), it may require costly Leachate sampling to ensure that once the material is in the landfill, the lead won’t leach into the environment and contaminate the water table or damage the environment.
